Inspired by the weekly volleyball tournaments hosted by migrant domestic workers (MDW) in Kallang, this project envisions the creation of a self-organized community in adaptive spaces within distributed locations as a response to the dynamics of urban development and the cyclical displacement of MDW communities in Kallang, Singapore. Recognizing the roles of enclaves as space for social capital accumulation, this envisions a network of interconnected productive enclaves that ensures a self-sustaining ecosystem of empowerment for MDW communities.

Very often questions are posed on the extent of the roles of designers in helping the marginalized. In response, Migrant Islands distance itself from designers, highlighting the significance of giving autonomy and agency to them to ensure true change. This project explores the toolsets and framework needed for MDW to build their own enclaves and shape their communities as their rights to the city.
